The definition nobody gives you
The difference between accent lighting and general lighting is intent. It is selective by definition. One feature, lit deliberately, while everything around it stays dark. The dark part is not an oversight. It is the other half of the effect. That is really the whole idea, stated as plainly as it can be. Pick the handful worth seeing and stop there. The pull is always to light one more thing, and holding it is the entire skill.
What tends to earn it
Not everything
https://titusfmbc425.brightsora.com/posts/event-lighting-what-temporary-displays-involve-how-does-event-lighting-work-what-you-need-to-know-lighting-an-outdoor-event is improved by a fixture pointed at it. Texture is the best predictor: masonry, tree bark, timber, anything with relief in it. Smooth surfaces reflect light without doing anything with it. Shape helps too: a tree with structure, an arch, a column, a gable peak.
The most common mistake
Plans go wrong when the list grows. The homeowner likes the first uplit tree and asks for a second, then a third, then the corners of the house, then the shrubs. At some point there is no dark left to contrast against, and nothing stands out anymore. Restraint is the technique. The best accent plans tend to look almost underdone on paper and exactly right on the property at night, which is why they are hard to sell and easy to appreciate.
Where it sits among the other work
Accent lighting rarely stands alone. The other layers are path and bed lighting, security coverage, and the house itself. Accent lighting is the layer that adds intent.
One more thing about brightness
Accent fixtures do not need to be bright. After dark it takes very little light to draw the eye, and too much reads as a floodlight. The goal is emphasis, not visibility.
From below or down out of a tree
Direction changes the whole character. Uplighting comes from below, so it feels staged, in a good way on the right subject. Light from above feels natural, which is why it suits places people sit.
Plants grow. The aim drifts
Landscape accents point at plants, and plants move. Growth closes over a fixture, and mulch, mowing and weather move ground mounted units. It is a small thing that makes a big visual difference. Re aiming is worth doing periodically.Aim gets checked the way everything else here is judged: by standing on the property after dark and looking.
