Every quote calls itself custom
Custom is on every website in this trade. The word no longer distinguishes anybody. The test is not what they say. It is whether anything was drawn before the number appeared. That is the whole distinction, and it is worth holding onto while you compare quotes. A package is a price with a description attached. A design is a plan for your property that arrives at a price. Both can be perfectly honest pieces of business. Only one of them is designed for you, and you deserve

What you should be looking at
A real design tells you where light goes and why. It names which rooflines, which gables, which trees, which walkways, instead of saying the front of the home. It says what color temperature the everyday setting will be. It says where power comes from. And it accounts for what stays dark, deliberately.
Order of operations
A price with nothing behind it is not comparable to anything. The cheaper number frequently covers a smaller scope, which only becomes clear at night after the install. When the design comes first, you are comparing the same work. When the price comes first, scope gets trimmed to hit it.A plan you understand is also a plan you can hold somebody to, which is the practical reason to insist on one rather than accepting a number and a handshake.
Designing for how you live there
A good design conversation involves a lot of asking. How you use the outside of your home, where you actually go after dark, and whether the priority is holidays, everyday light, or both. Those answers change the plan more than the architecture does.
Design lets one plan cover several jobs
Roofline, landscape, accent, patio and security work all tend to come up. Bought separately over several years, they end up mismatched: inconsistent color, uneven brightness, no hierarchy. One plan, installed over time if necessary, holds together.
You are allowed to push back on the plan
The first plan is not meant to be final. If a run looks wrong to you, say so. If it comes back to you unchanged, or the answer is that this is how it is done, that tells you something. The answer should be that revisions are expected.
What you walk away with
A design is worth having in writing. It is useful down the road for reasons you cannot predict now. The design is yours.
