What the word actually means
Most outdoor lighting answers the question of how to light a property. Accent lighting asks which one thing should be looked at. It is not coverage. Point it at a specimen tree, a stone column, a water feature, a front door and stop. The dark part is not a gap in the plan. It is the reason the lit thing stands out.The concept takes one sentence and a lot of discipline. Pick what matters and stop there. Every plan drifts toward more, from the homeowner and sometimes from the company selling fixtures.
What tends to earn it
Some things take light well and some do not. Texture is the usual test: stone, brick, rough bark, a heavy timber, a carved door. Flat painted siding gives you almost nothing back. Form is the second test.
How people get it wrong
The failure mode is easy to describe: too many accents. The homeowner sees one lit feature and wants more, then the whole bed, then the driveway. Once the whole yard is bright, the emphasis is gone, which means the money bought brightness rather than effect. A disciplined plan says no more than it says yes.The best accent plans read as sparse in a drawing and correct once you are standing in front of the house after dark.
Where it sits among the other work
Accent lighting is usually one layer of several. The other layers are landscape, security and roofline work. Accent lighting is what keeps the result from looking merely lit.
One more thing about brightness
Accent fixtures do not need to be bright. After dark the threshold is low, and too much reads as a floodlight. The goal is emphasis, not visibility.
From below or from above
Accent light can come from the ground or from overhead, and the difference is not subtle. Light from below is not how daylight works, which is why it suits a column, a trunk or a stone face and flatters very little else. Light from above reads as

Accent lighting is not set and forget
Landscape accents point at plants, and plants move. Growth blocks the throw, and mulch, mowing and weather move ground mounted units. It is not a fault, it is just how it works. Re aiming every couple of seasons keeps the plan looking the way it was designed to.Aim gets checked the way everything else here is judged: by walking out at night and seeing what the light is doing.
